Ryad Merhy with the WBC world championship belt

Special WBC guest

Ryad Merhy

WBC Bridgerweight world champion

Belgium's reigning WBC world champion, and the reason a WBC belt in a Brussels ring is not an abstraction. He took the bridgerweight title in May 2026, after seven years at the top of the cruiserweight division.

Background

Merhy was born in Ouragahio, Ivory Coast, and boxes out of Belgium. He turned professional at nineteen and had the WBA Inter-Continental cruiserweight title by twenty-three, then held the WBA interim and regular cruiserweight championships across four years from 2019.

He is an orthodox pressure fighter with a stoppage in roughly four of every five wins, which is the sort of record that gets a hall full before the main event rather than after it.
